May 2021 - A new variant, should we worry?

The new variants in COVID19 are quite rightly taking the headlines. As most of the world begins to benefit from the various restrictions and vaccinations programmes to suppress the virus and protect the community, our attention turns to the existence and spread of new variants. Unfortunately, this is something that we will now see as the virus mutates and tries to survive in the face of vaccination programmes. However all may not be as bleak as it seems.

There is good evidence to suggest that the current vaccines are effective in protecting us from serious illness. Whilst we must be wary of new variants as they emerge, if we continue our sensible practises and the vaccination programme completes we will have good protection.

It is also important not to ignore those symptoms you may have been experiencing as there is emergence of a new variant. The balance has most likely tipped in favour of our longer term health needs and the consequences of those may be the real challenge in the coming years.

If you have had symptoms, please consult your GP or we would be happy to see you in our clinic.

Take care,

Manish Chand
