April 2023 - Why settle for old-fashioned surgery?

Technology has revolutionised modern living. Over the last 30 years we have seen the advancement of technology into our everyday lives to a point where there is some degree of dependency.

Unfortunately, we have not seen such of progression of technology into healthcare. The only major revolution we have seen in surgery over the same timeframe is that of the use of laparoscopic surgery, however this too, is not universally adopted. There still seems to be an old-fashioned culture amongst some surgeons who have not transitioned into modern surgery of laparoscopy and robotics to continue to offer open surgery where there is clearly a benefit for those patients to undergo minimally invasive approaches.

The benefits of minimally invasive surgery and in particular robotics is now widespread within the literature. There are rarely indications for an initial open approach in most surgical conditions and it is important that patients research and seek appropriate information to ensure that they are getting optimal treatment plans. Of course, there are some cases in which open surgery is the only option but fortunately this is mostly the situation in highly complex or repeated surgeries.

If you wish to discuss further options then please do not hesitate to get in contact with the practice and we would happy to provide an opinion

Take care,

Manish Chand
