Drinking Water after Workout

June 2022 - Summer is coming

This summer is predicted to be one of the hottest on records. That means for many people it will be an uncomfortable time and unfortunately, there are those who are more vulnerable that will experience medical problems. However, even for those who are in better health there are certainly precautions one should take with the most obvious being the use of sunscreen. But, the hot weather can directly affect bowel function and it is important to recognise steps you can take to keep things regular.

When the weather is hot, we lose a significant amount of water from our body through metabolic rate and excessive sweating to keep our bodies cool. Water that we lose from the body must be replaced to keep our internal systems regulated. This includes the function of our bowel and thus bowel habit. It is hugely important to keep hydrated and that may mean drinking additional water throughout the day to ensure we remain balanced against water loss.

One of the common symptoms we see through the hotter months is constipation. This is because the gastrointestinal system requires water to help lubricate stools and keep their consistency soft. A change in bowel habit should always be flagged to a doctor but it is important to take care of your gut health with simple measures.

If you have any concerns with constipation or a change in bowel habit, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

Take care,

Manish Chand
