December 2022 - Pele and Colorectal Cancer

We have heard the sad news in recent days of the passing of the football legend Pele. Many people have known over the last few weeks and during the televised World Cup that Pele had been unwell, but it hasn't been widely publicised as to the nature of his illness out of respect.

Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with colorectal cancer and the disease had become more progressive. It is sad that yet another high-profile figure has succumbed to this disease. However it does highlight that colorectal cancer is indiscriminatory and can affect anybody regardless of geographical or socio-economic status.

There are various screening strategies around the world and here in the UK we use the faecal immunochemical stool sample test. This is known as a FIT test. The stool sample test allows greater stratification of those at high risk of developing: cancer and those people are then advised to have a colonoscopy which remains the gold standard investigation.

If you have noticed any symptoms or signs that are concerning and you're able to see a list of these on the various informative pages on the website then please do not hesitate to get in touch. I hope you enjoy the remainder of the holiday, take some rest and spend some time with family and friends.

Take care
